Construction Begins on New Wastewater Management Project in Kampong Cham

KAMPONG CHAM: The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) inaugurated the construction site of a sewer system and wastewater treatment plant in Kampong Cham City under the presidency of the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, on the morning of June 16.

Senior Minister Sun Chanthol said that the project to build a sewer system and a wastewater treatment plant in Kampong Cham is very important for protecting the environment and public health. He said that without these projects, polluted water will flow into lakes, fields, and plantations, affecting the environment, people's health and other crops.

He emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, Cambodia has turned into a peaceful country, creating opportunities for the Royal Government to build infrastructure, schools, pagodas, hospitals and more. The country has also attracted foreign investment and tourists, which creates jobs for Cambodians and reduces poverty.

Kampong Cham Provincial Governor Un Chanda said that the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a drainage system in Kampong Cham City is a demonstration of the Royal Government’s concern for the development of Kampong Cham infrastructure and improving the well-being of its people with sustainable environmental protection.

Governor Un Chanda said that the drainage system in Kampong Cham City is currently 36,376 meters long. However, the drainage system does not reach technical standards that can meet the needs of the people in Kampong Cham. In particular, the sewer system does not function properly during the rainy season, which has caused excessive flooding in Kampong Cham. He asked for the public to be understanding and patient while the road and sewer construction takes place.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) representative Tony Gill said that this project, it will sanitize wastewater and redirect rainwater in Kampong Cham province, reducing the risk of infrastructure damage. The project is due to finish by December 2025 at a cost of $22 million USD and covers a total area of 439.45 hectares in four communes: Sangkat Kampong Cham, Sangkat Boeung Kok, Sangkat Veal Vong and Sangkat Sambour Meas. The wastewater treatment plant in Kampong Cham will be able to filter wastewater from nearly 4,000 homes and office buildings in Kampong Cham city totalling about 5,000 cubic meters per day.

The Kampong Cham City project is part of the ADB’s Fourth Greater Mekong Subregion Corridor Towns Development Project which aims to enhance the competitiveness of towns through investment in basic urban infrastructure including sanitation, solid waste management, urban roads and flood management.
